In 197, Blumer and Katz come developed 'The  uses and gratification theory' arguing audiences consume media text for one or more of the following four reasons: Information Entertainment Socialisation (replacing human relationship) Surveillance News = facts/information BUT because the 'news' you see on the TV, online in newspapers is also a 'product' that has to sell a target audience, it can also be entertaining and this may distract the facts. Fake news - false information given in a news report Examples:    Two cousins found some 'fairies' but it was actually cardboard cutout of fairies from a book. A photographer in Houston photoshopped a picture of the Houston airport being underwater and sold the picture to the BBC.
